Innovative Leadership Platform

The Innovative Leadership Network (ILN) is a Nordic cross-disciplinary platform focusing on the development of artist-led initiatives in the contemporary choreographic performing arts. The network establishes a cross-disciplinary exchange between artistic activities (choreography), universities (academic research) and the market (from production to presentation spaces). ILN aims at providing a frame to question classic models, tackle old-fashion interdependences and rethink practices in the contemporary creation value chain.

Gathering 16 partners from 7 countries, the network works towards enabling artists to become leaders, developing innovative methods for residency & research activities, as well as developing new ideas in relation to institutions, advocacy, fundraising, audience engagement, new presentation formats, communication strategies, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

The platform proposes fruitful exchanges between Nordic & European artists, researchers and creative workers from the field through networking events, lectures & thematic workshops, and open seminars that will take place in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway from April 2018 to October 2020. Regular online publications will feed the reflection and build cross-sectoral knowledge.

INL is one strand of an ambitious Artist’s Research Lab and Residency Programme developed by Dansehallerne and its international partners.

Artists in different arts disciplines increasingly are working together to share knowledge, expertise, contacts and resources. The ‘self-organisation’ of artists has become a buzzword. This trend covers very diverse models and organisational forms that treat very different functions important to artistic development: not only creation, presentation and business support, but also reflection and debate, advocacy and even residencies. But there is one recurring element in all of these diverse endeavours. All are attempts and strategies to provide greater support in today’s knowledge economy, socio-economic as well as artistic, to the careers of individual artists, careers that have become more vulnerable.

International Encounters: lecture & workshop – Goran Sergej Pristaš (Croatia)

An event investigating BADco.’s project “Institutions Need to be Constructed,” a hybrid format of a film set and performance space. Located inside deserted factories or unfinished public buildings it gathered artists, activists and advocates of new institutional cultural models, potential users, film extras and spectators for a one-day event structured as 8 hours of work, 8 hours of education and 8 hours of rest: a 24-hour camp with public performances, lectures, discussions and a shooting of a film.

International Encounters: lecture & workshop – Andy Horwitz (USA)

Executive Director of the L.A. Dance Project, Andy Horwitz will deliver a lecture and lead a workshop dedicated to “Performance, Society and the Human Economy”, tackling several key questions: What does it mean to be an artist making performance in 2018 and what will it take to survive? As longstanding accepted structures for cultural production continue to erode, how does the artist frame their identity, their work and create new ways to achieve sustainability? How does the self-conception of the individual artist intersect with the ever-shifting cultural frameworks of the 21st century and what is the role of the artistic imagination in shaping (or resisting) the tides of social, politic and economic change?
