Art in the public space has too often been compliant and assenting – for the very reason that it operates in shared space. But the rise of social movements in which citizens claim the public space in unorthodox or creative ways (from the Arab springs to Occupy, the Movements of the Squares, Nuit debout, or, more recently, the Gilets jaunes and the School Strike for Climate), alongside the return of antagonistic politics (as theorised by Chantal Mouffe), has had an impact on the behaviour of artists. Indeed, in recent years many artists have proposed more dissenting work. This is perhaps also the result of an evolution, in the minds both of artists and of the person on the street, of what art in the public space should actually be – an evolution that has taken the form from being presented more as an entertaining event to an artwork that becomes the object of debate. If this evolution is positive, it is sometimes also dangerous, for there is a risk that the artist’s provocation may hurt those citizens who are not familiar with all the codes of contemporary art, and create a double violence by excluding or using a certain language. This lecture-workshop will navigate through these different questions, looking at various works created for the public space during the last twenty years.

About The Innovative Leadership Network (ILN)

“Artists as leaders of change”

ILN is a Nordic cross-disciplinary platform working towards enabling artists to become leaders, developing innovative methods for artistic research activities, as well as developing new ideas in relation to rethinking institutions, increasing audience engagement, investigating new presentation formats, tackling political & societal issues or working on sustainable practices… in order to challenge status quo.

The platform proposes fruitful exchanges between Nordic & European artists, researchers and creative workers from the performing arts field through networking events, lectures & thematic workshops, and open seminars that will take place in Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway from April 2018 to October 2020. Regular online publications will feed the reflection and build cross-sectoral knowledge.

INL is one strand of an ambitious Artist’s Research Lab and Residency Programme developed by Dansehallerne and its partners.
