No Category Practice

Workshop: Decolonizing The Classroom

Themes: Funk & Turning Suffering Into Art

So what we are going to be diving into & what im gonna be having you do is Decolonizing The Classroom. We’ll be addressing how we view what is technical, we’ll even be leaving the Eurocentric way of leading a classroom and returning back to my roots of ancestral practices, which is going back to the circle to learn. We’ll be honoring pronouns, removing gendered language, i’ll be challenging you in various ways from addressing white privilege, to diving in what makes some of these Black American Vernacular dances what they are thru osmosis. Even we’ll be really digesting Black American music to truly connect & pull out your OWN authenticity without tryna look or move Black. These classes/workshops will test your Mind, Body & even your spirit, some come ego free and ready to learn how to Unlearn.

Workshop Must Brings: Bring Street Shoes, Comfortable Clothes to sweat and relax in and any food and water you need during break.

The workshop is held at KU.BE, Dirch Passers Allé 4, 2000 Frederiksberg in studio: Zen 1.

How to get there?
Zen 1 is located on third floor, please use the backstairs to access the studio.
Go in via the main entrance on first floor, keep going straight ahead towards the changing rooms next to the climbing area on the first floor, open the door in the far end and go up the stairs until you arrive on the third floor. Zen 1 is through the door on your right side.

Accessibility requires a little extra preparation. The studios are equipped for wheelchair users. It is possible to use the lift for access up to the 3rd floor. If you wish to use this, please let us know in advance, as the studio you have to go through via the lift is sometimes booked.
We kindly ask you to meet up 15 minutes prior to class, so there is time for “self check in” with your QR code on the ticket.

Only as a member, you can take part in Dansehallerne’s training activities – a year-round program with approximately 5 days of training per week. This is for all professional members no matter background in dance training, and it is possible to drop in. International guests can also join training for free for up to 1 month.

Toniah Pedersen
Grooves and Choreography

Toniah’s teaching is built around the versatility within the genre of HipHop. Toniah’s style and way of choreographing are inspired by various genres within Afro-American cultural dance styles. Toniah merges the different elements of dance cultures to generate a more free dance language, so students are tasked with freestyling (without the battle element) and generating material for choreographies.

Toniah’s classes will be built around grooves, foundations, and party steps, focusing on the ease and playfulness in dance before the complicated. Toniah uses her own personal approach to build choreographies from her own freestyle language, which she is known for after many years in the industry.

The teaching is built around a good warm-up, after which Toniah will spend time dancing basic steps, foundations, party steps, and the ease of dancing freely. Students are encouraged to copy the instructor without judging their own process and approach to the various dance cultures.

Toniah will emphasize that students have the opportunity to rehearse, learn new things, and dance well through different genres within Afro-American cultural dances with foundations in jazz, Hip Hop, Breaking, etc.

Finally, Toniah will build choreographies and small series from her own freestyle language, which, in addition to challenging the students, should also encourage them to generate series based on Toniah’s methods. Toniah works from sharp lines, grooves, and a natural mix of genres to create space for simplicity.

House/ Floor Work

In this workshop we will delve into the universe of house dance with a special focus on floor work. From intricate footwork to fluid movements, we will experiment and play with different approaches to the floor. Drawing inspiration from floor acrobatics and techniques found in art forms like capoeira we will incorporate elements of grace, musicality, and agility. Embracing the spirit of community and celebration this workshop is based on social dance practices where exchange, support and collaboration are values we will use to support and embrace each other’s individual expression.
