Performances for Pets

Dog performances SOLD OUT – Tickets for cats still available here

Performances exclusively for cats or dogs and their owners.

Contemporary pets no longer have a practical function in the household. Cats do not need to catch mice, dogs no longer need to guard the house or hunt. Pets have upgraded their job descriptions and line of work to what we call immaterial or affective labour. In short, pets manage to make a living out of just being themselves instead of producing something. And that we find very similar to contemporary affective labour of ourselves as artists.
We have devised “Performances for Pets” as a performance for our colleagues, the pets, giving them the role of the audience, which reverses the habitual situation where animals entertain humans.

In practical terms – we perform the work for pets in spaces which provide minimum distraction, similar to what a theatre of art gallery would be for humans.

The performances for cats will be performed in the domestic environment of cats in Copenhagen and the performances for dogs will be in Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art.
A performance for dogs is typically 15-20 minutes long and a performance for cats lasts between 20 to 30 minutes.

We meet the pet(s) and their owner individually and adapt the performance to the particular pet or group of pets. The performance itself is a mixture of mimicry, body work techniques imitating various forms of non-human voice and body vocabulary, empathizing with possible meaning or connection with our audience.
From the human perspective what we do looks like a hybrid between dance, theatre and performance art, but for pets the distinctions between dance, theatre and art are not as relevant.
