CIRCUS KATOEN (BE) / AS HEAVY AS IT GOES

Acrobatics is nothing but handling of weight and balance!

In the performance AS HEAVY AS IT GOES Willem Balduyck and Sophie van der Vuurst de Vries are stripping down their circus discipline to the essential, redefining their practice with a little help from a pile of heavy potato-bags. Innovative and humorous. Touching and thought provoking. Who ever thought that 50 minutes of labour could be so enchanting?

Circus Katoen is a Belgian based company with the two artists Willem Balduyck (Belgium) and Sophie van der Vuurst de Vries (The Netherlands). They both followed a similar path, starting at a young age learning various circus disciplines. In 2008 they met at the professional circus education ‘Codarts Rotterdam Circus Art’.

Performances:
CIRCUS NEXT LAUREATES NIGHT

C!CAF wants to celebrate and support talented emerging creators who in their works challenges, pushes and develops contemporary circus art form to new technical and artistic heights! We therefore dedicate Thursday in the festival program to this years Circus Next Laureates; In the double program “Laureates Night” we present two exciting works that have been selected in the Circus Next Program 2018-2019: Materia by Andrea Salustri (IT) and Contra by Laura Murphy (GB), hereby premiering in continental Europe.

MATERIA – A fantasmagoric play with light, wind, body and polystyrene.
Andrea Salustri fuses juggling, object manipulation and dance in his research into the materiality of polysterene. The latter becoming the protagonist – the performer it’s mere servant. In this suggestionizing universe your senses are being challenged: is this a glance into the outer space or a glimpse into the atomic structures of your own body? Andrea’s interest grows on the edges between juggling, dance and music. Salustri comes from Rome, where he learned contact juggling, fire manipulation and has been working as a street artist.

Strobe lighting will be used during this performance.

CONTRA – an uncompromising and witty feminist-circus-comedy.
Drawing from circus, stand-up and live art, Contra is an autobiographical solo cabaret
of contradictions. Using a rope and a roll of cling film, Laura Murphy sets her experiences of her own body amidst an anecdotal tapestry of body hair observations on public transport and dinner table discussions about lesbian sex. Dark, witty and uncompromising – Contra interrogates personal, social and historical occupations of the female body, and explores – literally – where such bodies are positioned and how we are meant to look at them.

Expect nudity and explicit references to female sexuality and mythical reptiles.

Laura Murphy is a physical performer, theatre maker and academic researcher, working across circus, live art and contemporary performance. She likes talking – a lot – and explores how her aerial rope practice contradicts and intersects with the ethics of live art. How can the use of loops, knots, drops and vertical space give new meaning to ideas, which go far beyond the virtuosity of performing tricks or death-defying feats?

Performance:
Animal Religion (CAT) / FANG – Man, matter and creation!

Merging his acrobatic body into 500 kg’s of clay, Quim Girón challenges the borders between man and matter. Mutually shaping and challenging each other’s physicality, grotesque and unexpected creatures arise and fall. You are constantly on the edge of your chair trying to see what is next. Accompanying him on stage are composer/musician Joan Cot Ros and light designer Joana Serra; executing a highly elaborated score of sound and light. Quim Girón Figuerola is the founder and artistic director of Animal Religion. His work focuses on the themes of animality, gender, surreal humour and the research for new expressions with circus.

30. – 31. of March 2019
Performance:
Grensgeval (BL) / PLOCK!

Buzzing cans, dancing paint, coloured sounds, and an acrobatic painter. Visual circus-sound theatre that appeals to all the senses!

Axel tries to copy the painting of his hero Jackson Pollock. But how can he make the right blot on the right spot? Should he drip, throw, pour or splash the paint? Does he need to work with brushes or sticks or entire containers? He uses all of his body parts, but no matter how he turns, twists, jumps, or rolls: his painting does not resemble the original. A performance for everyone who likes to colour outside the lines every now and then. Grensgeval creates performances with and for children and young people. The company takes point of departure in the children´s fantasy and the child’s intuition in their exploration of adult themes. In the productions, Grensgeval places these themes in a new, deliberately naïve logic, mixed with a dose of anarchy and punk.
