Kristin Ryg Helgebostad and Laura Marie Rueslåtten (NO)
CHEERS / cancelled
Cancellation / announcement: We are so sad to share with you that the Norwegian corona-restrictions have kept otherwise unstoppable Kristin Ryg Helgebostad and the whole crew behind CHEERS at home – thus the performances at Edison October 2nd and 3rd are cancelled. Instead, we proudly present Deep Etude by the shooting star Alma Söderberg – same time and place; ticket sale starts in a few days.
Presented in collaboration between Dansehallerne and Betty Nansen Teatret:

Cutting-edge performances, talks & more
September – October 2020
Six women on stage – and plenty of twirling pompoms.
As a teen, Kristin Ryg Helgebostad was a cheerleader for the local ice hockey club. With CHEERS she celebrates – and distorts – cheerleading as a genre, working with the unpredictable forces and energy that arise when we join up to cheer someone or something along. She conducts her explorations in a fruitful collaboration with the composer and carillonist Laura Marie Rueslåtten.
Here, you won’t see the miniskirts and spectacular acrobatics associated with cheerleading in American films. Instead, CHEERS takes a musical, yet disruptive approach to its subject matter, playing around with the genre’s overall aesthetic and style of movement: geometric formations are transformed by being enacted lying down rather than upright. The sound of bells merge with an insistent cheering that surges from a whisper to a roar, issuing a call to action! The women reveal a power that by turns strengthens, weakens and transforms a fragile yet loving collective.
CHEERS won the NATT & DAG Oslo Prize for Best Stage Performance in 2018 and was nominated for the Norwegian Dance Critics’ Award in 2019.
In 2020, the duo Helgebostad/Rueslåtten were selected as Aerowaves artists in recognition of their joint project CHEERS. Every year, the prestigious international network Aerowaves appoints the twenty most talented and promising choreographers in Europe.

Laura Marie Rueslåtten is a trained carillonist and one of the very few professional carillonists in Norway, working at the Oslo City Hall and the Urianienborg Church. She composes original music and is often invited to perform at special occasions such as official state visits and the Nobel Prize Award Ceremonies. CHEERS is a follow-up to Helgebostad / Rueslåtten’s critically acclaimed ME TOO (2015), which has toured Norway and Europe extensively ever since its premiere. ME TOO brings together hand bells and movement to form a landscape of materialised energy. It was nominated for the Norwegian Dance Critics’ Award and selected for the Aerowaves network and the ICE HOT Nordic Dance Platform in 2016.
